The paper analyses the role of the British monarchy in the consolidation of the new Commonwealth that emerged after 1949 by examining the public activities of Elizabeth II during the first two decades of her reign. By analysing her extensive travels to Commonwealth countries between 1952 and 1972, the aim is to highlight the monarch's personal contribution to the organisation and to draw a possible comparison with the current situation of Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth.
