The etymology of the noun, which refers to the aquatic element, resonates with some early attestations of the term found in a recipe book from the early 15th century. From this, the hypothesis arises that «guazzabuglio» was initially a culinary term, indicating a ‘mess’ in the gastronomic sense, and that it later developed its modern semantics of ‘disorder’ or ‘hodgepodge’.
