The article examines the current situation of teaching and learning German as a foreign language in Lombardy, against the backdrop of the historical, economic, cultural and political relations between Italy and the German speaking countries. Firstly, an overview of the current and past motivations for learning German is provided, followed by a presentation of the research project LITI Deutsche Sprache in Italien and an analysis of the recent data (from 2018 to 2023) on trends in the teaching of German in schools, universities and extracurricular settings. Finally, a discussion is held on the steps needed to bolster the future development of German teaching.
