Titolature in caratteri capitali romani incisi in Italia tra il 1506 e il 1520

This article investigates the complex typographic practice of titlings in sixteenth-century Italian printing, focusing on selected "polizze" as a case study. By examining the titlings employed by printers such as Bernardino Vitali, the Soncino press, and Andrea Torresani, the study sheds light on the aesthetic choices and technical refinements that characterized Italian titling practices. Contrary to the traditional historiographical narrative that privileges the typographic sophistication of Northern European presses, this contribution reclaims the high quality and stylistic originality of Italian titling typefaces.
