This contribution reflects – starting from the discussion of a recent volume by Valentina Pazé – on how bodies, particularly female bodies, appear on the contemporary scene within three different phenomena: their exhibition in the dynamics of prostitution, their split in the multiple traces of surrogate motherhood, and their concealment through obedience to religious precepts. The essay thus seeks to identify similarities and differences between them, defining how prostitution and surrogacy differ from each other and how these two diverge from the practice of veiling among Islamic women. The aim is to propose an ethical and political reflection on the relationship between freedom and corporeality in our time, beyond the dichotomy between gift and market.
