The essay illustrates the rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni by intransigent Catholicism in Bergamo during the late Nineteenth-century. During the conflict with the Italian state, the two writers were disputed by Catholics against secular culture. They were elevated to great prophets of the homeland, because they demonstrated the Christian soul of the nation. In this sense, their valorization contributed to consolidating the historical-theological paradigms that supported the Catholic reconquest of society: for example, the Middle Ages and medieval corporations, as affirmations of authentic civil and religious freedom. The rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni appears thus relevant for understanding, on the one hand, the relationship between Catholics and the nation, and on the other hand, the birth of an original Catholic patriotism.

Abstract
The essay illustrates the rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni by intransigent Catholicism in Bergamo during the late Nineteenth-century. During the conflict with the Italian state, the two writers were disputed by Catholics against secular culture. They were elevated to great prophets of the homeland, because they demonstrated the Christian soul of the nation. In this sense, their valorization contributed to consolidating the historical-theological paradigms that supported the Catholic reconquest of society: for example, the Middle Ages and medieval corporations, as affirmations of authentic civil and religious freedom. The rediscovery of Dante and Manzoni appears thus relevant for understanding, on the one hand, the relationship between Catholics and the nation, and on the other hand, the birth of an original Catholic patriotism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
