This study explores the paradox of presence and absence in Ramon Llull’s Llibre d’Amic i Amat, analyzing its mystical dimensions through a comparative lens with Sufi traditions. The work’s structure and themes—renunciation, desire, and the interplay between divine absence (ghayba) and presence (ḥuḍūr)—are examined in relation to Islamic mysticism, particularly the writings of early Sufis such as al-Balkhī and al-Junayd. The article highlights Llull’s engagement with Sufi literary devices, including metaphorical language and allusive discourse (ishārāt), as well as his emphasis on remembrance (remembrament), which parallels the Sufi practice of dhikr. Ultimately, the study underscores Llibre d’Amic i Amat as a unique case of literary mudejarismo, where Christian and Islamic mystical thought converge in a journey of spiritual sublimation and unification of the lover and the Beloved.
