Starting from the synthetic reconstruction of the legal framework for the international protection of cultural heritage, the contribution focuses on the status of cultural heritage of religious interest in the regulatory and soft law sources developed within the UNESCO system, with the aim of highlighting its peculiarities in terms of management systems and innovative perspectives for study and research represented by the experiences of religious cultural itineraries.
