Claudian's eulogistic poems include various descriptions of moments of leisure and periods of intense activities at the imperial court. These passages, mostly dedicated to the ideal behavior of a Roman emperor and his ministers, constitute an interesting literary experiment, where classical models (esp. Augustan and Flavian poetry) are employed in original ways, to express new ethical values (those of the late-antique cultural milieu). A specific case, involving potential indirect references to Varro's works on philosophy, is discussed in the appendix.

Abstract
Claudian's eulogistic poems include various descriptions of moments of leisure and periods of intense activities at the imperial court. These passages, mostly dedicated to the ideal behavior of a Roman emperor and his ministers, constitute an interesting literary experiment, where classical models (esp. Augustan and Flavian poetry) are employed in original ways, to express new ethical values (those of the late-antique cultural milieu). A specific case, involving potential indirect references to Varro's works on philosophy, is discussed in the appendix.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
