This paper is focused on the speeches addressed by Himerius to proconsular governors of Greece in Athens. It aims to highlight how the visits of proconsuls to Athens in fourth century AD and the praise given by Himerius in front of his students (and with his students) attest not only the involvement of the Roman proconsuls in the academic life of Athens, but also the interest in promoting social relations and building a network that linked the Athenian schools and their students to the highest officials of the imperial government.
