Abstract

In a letter dated September 1392, addressed to Pasquino Capelli, Coluccio Salutati enquires after an ancient manuscript, illustrated with geometrical figures, formerly belonging to Petrarch, as he had heard from Francescuolo da Brossano. This book, which the Florentine chancellor suspected to be in Gian Galeazzo Visconti’s Pavia library, contained a copy of Varro’s ‘De mensuris orbis terre’, that is, a work of gromatics. Here the manuscript is identified with Wolfenbüttel, Herzog-August-Bibl., MS Aug. fol. 36 23 (2403), 6th century, the famous “codex Arcerianus” of land surveyors, with few autograph marginalia by Petrarch. Here its complex history is reconstructed, and the marginalia are studied.
