Service-learning is a specific educational approach based on community service, which promotes academic learn-ing but also the personal and social growth of students. Well known in Higher Education, service-learning has a strong potential for transforming the University system at all levels (educational, organizational, cultural, and institutional). Particularly interesting is the relationship between service-learning and student well-being. While there is positive evidence regarding individual psychological well-being and comfort of experience, service-learn-ing calls for shifting from “feeling good” to “doing good”, from balance to dynamism and imbalance towards the other. These tensions, which are also crucial for the acquisition of competence, show even more clearly the revolutionary message of service-learning which, truly understood, can really transform universities in a human-centered direction.
Si definisce service-learning uno specifico approccio educativo basato sul servizio alla comunità, che promuove l’apprendimento accademico ma anche la crescita personale e sociale degli studenti. Oggetto di crescente attenzione in particolare nell’Higher Education, il service-learning ha un forte potenziale trasformativo dell’impianto univer-sitario a tutti i livelli (didattico, organizzativo, culturale e identitario-istituzionale). Particolarmente interessante è il rapporto tra service-learning e well-being degli studenti. Mentre vi sono evidenze positive che riguardano il benessere psicologico individuale e il comfort dell’esperienza studentesca, il service-learning spinge a un decentra-mento dallo “star bene” al “fare del bene”, dall’equilibrio al dinamismo e allo squilibrio verso l’altro. Queste ten-sioni, che sono cruciali anche per l’acquisizione di competenza, mostrano ancor più il messaggio rivoluzionario del service-learning che, se colto, può portare davvero a una trasformazione delle università in direzione human-centered.
