In this paper we are presenting the theoretical reflections on textual linearity by Ph. Wegener, a German linguist of the late 19th - early 20th c. who investigated some topics which would be central later on in the functional and communicational explanations of linguistic processes. In particular, Wegener focuses on three points. First, he outlines the two textual functions which intervene in the planning of the message structure in accordance with the communicative perspective of the sentence. Wegener calls them logisches Subjekt or Exposition and logisches Prädikat (nowadays one would use the terms theme and rheme). Secondly, he examines the structure of a longer text. In this case the abovementioned bipartition in logisches Subjekt and logisches Prädikat is specified through the principle of the progression of the text information structure. According to this principle communication consists of a progressive introduction of new information anchored in preexisting one (nowadays one would use the term thematic progression). Finally, he analyses the stylistic and rhetoric structure of narrative texts and in particular the order in which events are described (hysteron-proteron vs what Wegener calls proteron-hysteron). Wegener does not fail to mention the role of the “logisches Prädikat des Ganzen” (of the whole text) which regulates the textual disposition and range of all the other predicates and therefore of the sense of the text.
