A growing intellectual movement has been arguing that all education professionals strongly need research skills and competencies. But are these anything specific and ad- ditional with respect to educational expertise and know-how? In search of an answer, we take inspiration from the university-bound Research Skill Development (RSD) fra- mework (2007), answering the question “what counts as research”, breaking down the description of “what researchers do” into specific “facets”, and setting out different “levels of autonomy” in research activity. The framework might help diagnose skill gaps, and teach education professionals the research skills they need. But beyond didactic purposes, a conceptual work on this framework allows us to define that being a researcher can indeed be seen as consubstantial to the educational mission, while at the same time being a specific competency, and bringing about the need to develop new and effective technical skills.
