Managing complex medical problems requires the ability to execute different medical tasks; diagnosis, therapy planning and monitoring. Moreover, therapeutic plans have to be modified several times along the patient's progress according to his/her condition. In this paper we propose a method useful both for representing the management knowledge and for individuating pieces of knowledge that can be shared and reused in a knowledge based system. The methodology is illustrated by using a challenging clinical example; the management of leukemic children.

Abstract

Managing complex medical problems requires the ability to execute different medical tasks; diagnosis, therapy planning and monitoring. Moreover, therapeutic plans have to be modified several times along the patient's progress according to his/her condition. In this paper we propose a method useful both for representing the management knowledge and for individuating pieces of knowledge that can be shared and reused in a knowledge based system. The methodology is illustrated by using a challenging clinical example; the management of leukemic children.
