The paper focuses on three original handwritten missives by the man of letters Gasparo Murtola which were sent over a period of time extending from 1600 to 1614. The documents, of which the edition is provided in the appendix, are contextualized and analysed comparing the information contained in the mails to what the author writes in his verses. They allow us to highlight some biographical data concerning the intellectual circle of the Genoese: from Giovan Battista Strozzi the Younger and Gabriello Chiabrera to the Florentine literary academies and the Medici court. They enable us to establish certain chronological boundaries and to add some further details about his travels between Rome, Turin and Amelia. Furthermore, from the unpublished epistolary pages interesting first-hand information is obtained about the composition, printing, and circulation of both Latin and Italian works by the Ligurian poet: from the Nutriciarum sive naeniarum liber to the Epigrammata for Pope Paul V, passing through the fundamental stage of the hexameronic poem Della creazione del mondo
