L’etica della guerra (e l’amore ai nemici) in Tommaso d’Aquino

The purpose of this essay is to reconstruct and analyze Thomas Aquinas’ thought on the morality/immorality of the choice to fight a war and (to a lesser degree) of certain conducts that happen during wars (ambushes, spreading false information to mislead the enemy, actions that harm civilians, etc.). Thomas lays out three conditions of the just war (legitimate authority, just purpose, righteous intention in fighting), and then the theory of just war must be reconciled with the Aquinas’s condemnation of murder, with the precept to love one’s enemies, and with the precept to turn the other cheek. Finally, the essay identifies other conditions of just war that are hinted at or explicable in Aquinas’ texts. A critique of some of Thomas’ theses is deferred to a later article.

Lo scopo del presente contributo è ricostruire e analizzare il pensiero di Tommaso d’Aquino sulla moralità/immoralità sia della scelta di combattere una guerra, sia (in misura minore) di alcune condotte che si svolgono durante le guerre (imboscate, diffusione di informazioni false per depistare il nemico, azioni che danneggiano i civili, ecc.). Tommaso espone tre condizioni che rendono giusta una certa guerra (autorità legittima, giusta finalità, retta intenzione nel combattere) e allora la teoria della guerra giusta va conciliata con la condanna tommasiana dell’assassinio, con il precetto di amare i nemici e col precetto di porgere l’altra guancia. Infine, il saggio individua altre condizioni della guerra giusta che sono accennate o esplicitabili nel testi dell’Aquinate.
