Christian August und Johann Ludwig von Pfalz-Sulzbach, zwei Protestanten unterwegs in katholischen Territorien

The ‚Bildungsreise‘ (1642-1644) of the Sulzbach princes Christian August and Johann Ludwig took them all over Europe, spending a long time in Catholic countries. This article now aims to focus on the Protestant travel group’s confrontation with a Catholic environment. The documents show that confessional considerations determined not only the choice of places of study, but also everyday behaviour and dealings with fellow travellers and comrades. Although the author of the travelogue was strictly careful to avoid confessional ideological statements and showed a ‚value-neutral‘ and extremely respectful attitude, the astonishment at the splendour and opulence of churches and monasteries, the fascination and at the same time a slight scepticism when listening to miracle events and reports of wonders shimmer through the whole text.
