In this paper, I first examine the most influential views of modern scholars on Clodius’s legislation as tribune of people in 58 BCE. Then I offer a new reading of this legislation, stressing the social and political context in which it took place. Reading against the grain of Cicero’s portrait of Clodius in "In Pisonem," I bring to the fore several clues or openings that enable us to have a clearer view of Clodius’s role and activities in the late republic.

Abstract
In this paper, I first examine the most influential views of modern scholars on Clodius’s legislation as tribune of people in 58 BCE. Then I offer a new reading of this legislation, stressing the social and political context in which it took place. Reading against the grain of Cicero’s portrait of Clodius in "In Pisonem," I bring to the fore several clues or openings that enable us to have a clearer view of Clodius’s role and activities in the late republic.File in questo prodotto:
