In particular, the saint appears as a divine epiphany tested with the senses and valued through a rich "sensorium". Starting from the biblical-liturgical sensory culture and then with the theological-philosophical acquisitions of the 11th-13th century, the hagiographic sources have reserved a very wide space for the "external" senses, according to their own specific communicative language.

Abstract

The author presents some historical-religious observations on the sensory aspects related to the Christian cult of saints and to hagiographic sources. In the last decades, researches aimed at reconstructing the different sensorial cultures have spread widely in the historical field and in this regard the hagiographic sources have proved particularly valuable. The essay illustrates some aspects of the sensory perception of the divine in the religious traditions of the late antique, later adopted by Christians. A precise decoding of it will allow to avoid more and more misunderstandings in interpreting the sources
