Medical professionalism is based on the capacity of caring for the patient and not only to cure his/her desease. The ethics of care requires the development of emotional skills which allows health care professionals to be empathetic with their patients' experience of illness and to act accordingly. In the training curriculum and in continuing education of medical doctors, emotional competence should be integrated with scientific knowledge and clinical expertise, in order to improve the quality of health care services.
