Besides being one of the most ambitious political projects in contemporary history, the European Union represents a complex sui generis institution. Facing the challenge of imagining trends related to European integration and the future of the continent Europe tout court is always an arduous task; trying to outline the future of the European Union in the post-Covid19 era seems even more difficult. In this chapter, in order to reflect on possible future trends related to the old continent, several levels of analysis will be taken into account, concerning: (a) the international system; (b) the leadership dynamics among EU member states; (c) national political parties (in particular to focus on populist and extreme right-wing parties); and finally (d) specific elements of the complex architecture on which the governance of the EU and its institutions is based.
