The article analyzes the international historiography of the last twenty years on Pius XII and the Second World War. In particular, it dwells on four issues that have polarized the debate: the neutral position of the Holy See in the war, the relations of the Vatican with the Third Reich, the Holy See’s diplomatic relations with the countries at war, Pius XII’s silence on the Shoah. The article also points out the unresolved questions that historians will have to confront thanks to the new documents brought to light after the opening of the Vatican archives of Pius XII’s pontificate.
