«Universa historiarum nemora». Immagini ed esegesi negli alberi delle generazioni di Gioacchino da Fiore

Joachim of Fiore’s figures (figurae) may be related to the category of images modern historiography uses to define «visual exegesis». This article analyzes some characters of this system of representations and offers examples that are contemporary to the Calabrese abbot. The meanings of figurae are explored in light of the specific hermeneutics of Joachim of Fiore’s theology. Particular attention is dedicated to the Liber figurarum by showing its specificity and problems. The investigation focuses on images of trees, especially on those that are called «genealogy trees». Finally, the article compares some texts of Joachim of Fiore and the figures with the aim of locating their interpretation in the framework of the development of his thought.

Le «figurae» di Gioacchino si possono ascrivere a quella categoria di immagini per le quali la storiografia contemporanea parla di «esegesi visiva ». Dopo aver puntualizzato alcuni caratteri di questi sistemi di rappresentazione, e proposto alcuni esempi contemporanei all’abate calabrese, vengono rilevati alcuni punti a proposito del significato delle «figurae» nell’ermeneutica e nell’elaborazione teologica di Gioacchino; tra queste, ci si sofferma sulla raccolta del Liber figurarum, evidenziandone specificità e problemi. In seguito, l’indagine si concentra sulle immagini degli alberi, in particolare su quelli che vengono individuati come «alberi delle generazioni », per i quali si riscontrano vicinanze con l’iconografia e la speculazione esegetica contemporanea. Viene quindi proposto un confronto tra il testo di alcuni scritti di Gioacchino e le figure, al fine di situare l’elaborazione di queste all’interno dello sviluppo del suo pensiero.
