This article describes the migratory transition in Italy, which transformed it from an emigration country into one of the most attractive poles in the current international migration scenario; presents the demographic and social impact of immigration, as well as its cultural meaning – the transformation of Italy into a multi-ethnical and multi-religious country; focuses on the evolution of the attitudes of the Italian people towards the foreigners, and finally addresses some non-resolved issues of the Italian migration reality, with emphasis on the question of immigration governance and its impact in the labour market.
