Abstract
Although he drew heavily on Sismondi’s reconstruction of Italian history, Burckhardt rejected the negative evaluation of the fi fteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which he placed his Renaissance. The success of this new interpretative model at the end of the nineteenth century led many historians to fi nd the antecedents of the Renaissance in the Middle Ages. This process of “modernization” of the Middle Ages continued in the twentieth century as part of the so-called “revolt of the medievalists”, which came to a halt in the 1980s coinciding with the affi rmation of postmodernism.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
