The article focuses on the discussion of the so-called "Antonine Plague", the first historically documented pandemic event. In the span of 23 years, from 165 to 189, a virus, not yet identified with certainty, caused many millions of victims and very serious consequences on the economic and social life of the Roman Empire and also in the surrounding territories. However, the society of the time showed considerable resilience and the consequences of the crisis could eventually be satisfactorily overcome

L'articolo è dedicato alla trattazione della cosiddetta "peste antonina", il primo evento pandemico documentato storicamente. Nell'arco di 23 anni, dal 165 al 189, un virus, tuttora non identificato con certezza, provocò molti milioni di vittime e conseguenze molto gravi sulla vita economica e sociale dell'impero romano e anche nei territori circostanti. La società del tempo dimostrò tuttavia una notevole resilienza e le conseguenze della crisi poterono alla fine essere soddisfacentemente superate
