Il nome di Odysseus

This paper deals with the name of the protagonist of the Odyssey, defined as Odysseus in written literary documents but labelled with different (but coherent) forms on Greek vase-inscriptions. An analysis of these variants, togheter with their distribution shows that the epic form Odysseus is not used before the 5th century B.C. but it becomes unanimously attested after that date. On the other hand, the only painter familiar with the epic form (the Iscription Painter) in the 6th century may be have derived it from the Ionic colonizers in the area where he was active (Rhegion).

Il nome del protagonista dell’Odissea è unanimemente attestato come Ὀδυσσεύς nei documenti dell’epica scritta e della letteratura greca successiva, ma questa non è la forma usuale nelle più antiche iscrizioni su vaso. Benché le rese grafiche di questo nome presentino oscillazioni, le varianti del nome mostrano una coerenza di fondo, che consente di osservare come la forma epica Ὀδυσσεύς non sia diffusa al di fuori dell’ambito letterario prima del V secolo a.C. Il fatto che l'unico pittore che attesta la forma epica nel VI secolo a.C., il Pittore delle Iscrizioni, sia attivo in un'area di colonizzazione ionica (Reggio) può suggerire interessanti conclusioni sull'epica recitata in quelle zone da cantori ionici.
