The paper is centered on Stefano Nascimbeni, maestro of the palatine basilica of S. Barbara in Mantua from 1609 to 1612, when he left the town with some other musicians, such as Claudio Monteverdi. This essay analyzes some of his main pieces, the Messe a otto voci con il basso per l’organo (1612) in particular, to define his style, but also to try and assess the effects on the maestri di cappella of duke Guglielmo Gonzaga’s instructions for the composition of music destined to his basilica. The appendix contains a biography of Nascimbeni
