After an introduction on social identity theory and on self-categorization theory, the chapter reviews current sociopsychological researches about European identity. Cross-national differences in the perception of Europe as well as in the development of European identity are dealt with. A special attention is given to how European identity combines with pre-existing strong identities, such as regional and national identities.
