Abstract

The research aimed to verify the effectiveness of transitional-symbolic family mediation not only "measuring" results (ie the frequency of hits and breaks), but analyzing the connections between process variables and the results obtained. The question that has guided the research work that is not only "if" mediation works, but "how" and "why" it works. In other words, is analysis of the mediation process that allows one side to identify what factors are crucial, specific and distinctive transitional-symbolic approach to family mediation and the other to explore the potential of the model used in promote and protect the continuity of intergenerational transmission in situations of separation. The sample includes 56 family mediation processes conducted in the form of transitional-symbolic mediators trained in Milan and Rome by the Studies and Research on the Family. The analysis was conducted on descriptive accounts of the paths of mediation, written by the same mediator who conducted the intervention, based on a detailed and systematic pattern, default by the team of research and reported at each stage of the process. Each individual case is mediating been reconstructed and evaluated by a structured grid of categorical analysis, the purpose of "measuring" 17 variables, grouped in 4 homogeneous areas. The information thus produced were then processed through the usual statistical techniques for univariate and bivariate descriptive analysis in order to identify homogeneous profiles of intervention and the existence of relations between process factors and the results of the mediation work.
