Bernardine Dong Guangqing (董光清, 1917-2007) was a Franciscan Father and Catholic Bishop of Hankou since 1958. His episcopal appointment and consecration was the first one in the People’s Republic of China without the approval from Rome. Based on the unpublished documents mainly kept in the Hankou Diocese’s Historical Archive, the present article aims at reconstructing the personal experience of Bishop Dong and of the other Chinese Franciscans of Wuhan during the Fifties, a challenging decade for the religious communities in China.
