Castel Seprio, centro di potere. La ‘casa-forte’ e il suo contesto: la documentazione pregressa

Castel Seprio, a center of power: existing records regarding the ‘casa-forte’ and its context As part of the inter-university research project “Castel Seprio: centro di potere”, the writer intends to investigate the topographic and functional context of one of the castrum's presumed power-bases. At the end of the castle's southern extension lie the remains of a robust rectangular building, referred to in the literature as a ‘fortified house’ or ‘tower house’; it is traditionally held to have been the seat of civil and military authority in the Early Medieval castrum. A careful examination of nineteenth-century records and more recent surveys suggests that, at least in the castle's final period, this construction was not isolated, but stood in its own sector, probably protected by a curtain wall and/or moat; there were other buildings nearby, including religious ones. The conspicuous re-use of building stone in it suggests an early date; more detailed investigation is planned. The purpose of this review of the existing documentation is to recover data that enables the formulation of context-based preliminary working hypotheses as a basis for planning future fieldwork.

Nell’ambito del progetto di ricerca interuniversitario “Castel Seprio: centro di potere”, l’autrice intende occuparsi di uno dei presunti luoghi del potere del castrum e del relativo contesto topografico e funzionale. Alla terminazione dell’estesa propaggine meridionale del castello si ergono ancora i resti di un possente edificio rettangolare, citato in letteratura come ‘casa-forte’ o ‘casa-torre’: esso è tradizionalmente ritenuto la sede dell’autorità civile-militare del castrum altomedievale. Un’attenta rilettura di testimonianze ottocentesche e sondaggi più recenti induce a supporre che, almeno nel periodo finale del castello, la costruzione non fosse isolata, bensì inserita in un settore di pertinenza, verosimilmente protetto da una cortina muraria e/o da un fossato e con presenza di altre strutture nei pressi, anche religiose. Il cospicuo reimpiego di materiali lapidei di spolio nella torre ne avvalora una cronologia alta, in attesa delle programmate verifiche sul campo. La riconsiderazione della documentazione pregressa mira a recuperare dati utili alla formulazione di preliminari ipotesi di lavoro in una visione contestuale e alla migliore programmazione delle attività sul campo.
