Whether explicitly mentioned or not, the Bible is obviously an hypotext par excellence for Janet Frame’s The Carpathians, in the sense intended by Gérard Genette in his 1982 structuralist study Palimpsestes, in particular if one considers Frame’s continued use of the The Book of Genesis, which explains the beginnings of many things. Thus this essay aims to devote substantial attention to identifying and clarifying biblical material and patterns in the novel, as it is surely through the sacred background-texts so constantly invoked by the author as well as the countless biblical echoes discovered by the reader time and again that Frame’s reworked story of Mattina Brecon can acquire additional value and prophetical insight.
