Starting from the biographical resemblance between two writers of German origin, Ruth Klüger (Vienna 1931-) and Wolfgang Hildesheimer (Hamburg 1916 – Poschiavo 1991), the research aims to analyze from a comparative linguistic point of view an original text and its translation, both written by the authors themselves. The two writers – both of Jewish origin, bilingual (German/English), strongly interested in the language and in its peculiarities and potentialities – undertake a self-translation work. Ruth Klüger writes her autobiography in German (1992) and translates it into English after nine years (2001), Wolfgang Hildesheimer prepares two speeches for an English audience (1975, 1984) and translates them for a German one in the same year. The aim of the analysis is to highlight differences and affinities both in the choice of the translation method, if for example source-oriented or target-oriented, and in the use of the German language for the original version or for its translation.
Partendo dal parallelismo biografico tra due scrittori di origine tedesca, Ruth Klüger (Vienna 1931-) e Wolfgang Hildesheimer (Amburgo 1916 – Poschiavo 1991), il lavoro intende essere un’analisi linguistico-comparativa fra un testo originale e la sua traduzione, redatti dagli stessi autori. Entrambi di origine ebraica, bilingui (tedesco/inglese), fortemente interessati alla lingua e alle sue peculiarità e potenzialità, i due scrittori si impegnano in un lavoro di auto-traduzione: Ruth Klüger riscrivendo la sua autobiografia del 1992 dal tedesco all’inglese dopo alcuni anni (2001), Wolfgang Hildesheimer traducendo due suoi discorsi (1975, 1984) dall’inglese al tedesco nello stesso anno. Scopo dell’analisi è quello di evidenziare differenze e affinità sia nella scelta del metodo traduttivo, se ad esempio source-oriented o target-oriented, sia nell’uso della lingua tedesca per la versione originale o per la sua traduzione.
