You don’t need to know William Shakespeare’s plays by heart, or be a scholar working on his plays every day, to realise that adolescence constitutes an important and telling source of his plots, both tragedies and comedies, and also provides thematic material for his sonnets. In many cases adolescents are the leading characters in his plays, giving voice to the ideas and idiosyncrasies that make adolescents what they are.
