The paper focuses on the translation of the term "palabra, falla, doutrina, etc.", ("word" or "doctrine") used in everyday conversation as a common term and that used with a religious meaning. These terms are analysed in two works written by Matteo Ricci S.J., the Dicionário Português-Chinês – 葡漢辭典 - Portuguese-Chinese Dictionary and the treatise "Tianzhu Shiyi (True meaning of Lord of Heaven)".
