The article examines the Eastern policy of the Holy See during the pontificate of Pope Leo XIII. The Ottoman Empire constituted an area of interest for the Catholic Church not only for the growing pressure of the Russian Empire but also for the presence of several Catholic communities. The politics deployed by the Holy See involved diplomatic action, cultural initiatives and religious interventions in order to defend the Ottoman Empire and its delicate ethnic and religious pluralism.
