Taha Hussein, the great Egyptian intellectual of the 20th century, recalls in the third part of his autobiography his encounter with the modern Western university, first in Cairo and then in France. In Paris he is able to pass the much-feared exam of Latin and he gets to know his future wife. Back in Cairo after World War I, he will work throughout his life to foster the encounter between Europe and Egypt, on the basis of a shared humanism.
