The essay focuses on some documents and literary texts written between 14th and 16th century, dealing with the reading of French chivalric romances. The books were principally pursued to entertain and to give some relief from either the boredom of courtly life or the discomfort of unpleasant circumstances, such as long trips. Manuscripts and printed books were often lent and borrowed by different courts : a Mantuan episode of 1510 shows how this practice could have ore than one meaning and can now give significant insights to modern scholars.
