This article examines inscriptions in Milan dating from the last quarter of the 9th century during the episcopate of Ansperto (868-881). Two of them, both still preserved in the basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, are of particular importance: the epitaph of the emperor Ludovico II, who died in Brescia in 875 but was immediately brought to Milan thanks to the intervention of Ansperto, and the epitaph of the bishop himself, composed by the deacon Andrea. The two inscriptions are remarkable both textually and palaeographically. A new critical edition is offered with full commentary and a study of their subsequent fortunes in the course of the centuries.
