The essay aims to examine the requests of autonomy appeared in the southern regions of modern Iraq, revealing a continuity that, even with pauses and breaks, can be traced back to the beginning of the XX century. The research takes in exam a series of autonomy, federal and confederal plans submitted to Ottoman and British authorities during the first two decades of the XX century. The article also examines the debate related to the institutional and administrative structure of the post-2003 Iraq. Its final part is dedicated to a series of southern autonomy projects centered in Basra
