The article interprets the Lucretian verse against the background of the Epicurean doctrine of catastematic pleasure and its variation. The verb « substernere » is to be interpreted as meaning « to offer a ground» or « to provide a ground». Lucretius thus means that the elimination of pain is the condition of possibility for the variation of pleasure.
