Abstract: Aiming to define the role of varieties and clones in the environment, to optimize its employment and to provide useful indications for future clones selections; the productive performances of the most representative clones of the main varieties of reference (cv Barbera, 8 clones; cv Croatina, 5 clones and cv Pinot nero, 3 clones) of the D.O.C. “Oltrepò Pavese” (north – west Italy, Lat N 45°) were studied. Three different sites within the best area for red wine production were followed for some years (4 or 7). According to the results of the Multifactor Analysis of Variance (MANOVA), trough the percent evaluation of the variability (sum of squares) each sources of variation (genotype – varieties or clones – cultivation sites, years and all the interaction of two level) were weighed. The effect of the variety appears as the most important factor of the viticulture model while when considering the clones, the cultivation site and the other sources of variation were the most important factors. The comparison between clones and the environmental variability on yield performances of the vines has allowed to characterize better the clones of the varieties and allows to direct better the genetic selection for the future.
