The essay analyzes the close relationship between preaching and the forms of religious theater developed in 15th-century Florence. In particular, two types of religious theater are identified that are different but complementary: 1- the feasts of the Ascension, Annunciation and Pentecost, based on the use of complex stage machinery that had to create in the faithful a concrete and attractive image of paradise; 2 - the sacred representations which, based on texts dramaturgically and rhetorically structured on the model of the sermons, were intended to educate the Florentines, both the children and the adults, to live righteously on both the civil and the religious level. This dual educational system, based on the use of sacred theater, constituted a fundamental innovation in the communication system of the medicean Florence.
