This essay, based on the main scientific literature, is divided into two parts. The first part provides a general survey of the educational reforms and institutions created in Italian Peninsula by Napoleon between 1802 and 1814. The second part describes the evolution of school systems – its continuity and discontinuities in relation to Napoleon’s inheritance – in each Italian State during the Restoration (1815-1835). The analyses deals with primary and secondary levels, academic disciplines, teachers, student numbers, and other aspects that concerned the functioning of the schools. The author assesses the consequences of the educational reforms and argues that in the first three decades of 19th Century the political authorities laid the foundations of a modern public school system in Italy.

Abstract
