This paper discusses some aspects of the proposals aiming at “democratizing science”. After having illustrated the liberal model of the self-government of science, and the supposed separatedness between science and society, the reasons for rethinking science in the light of the principles governing democratic societies are explained. Moreover, the problems affecting the scientific systems and the new forms of knowledge production, and particularly Citizens Science, are introduced and why they are leading towards the construction of a democratic society of knowledge.

Abstract

This paper discusses some aspects of the proposals aiming at “democratizing science”. After having illustrated the liberal model of the self-government of science, and the supposed separatedness between science and society, the reasons for rethinking science in the light of the principles governing democratic societies are explained. Moreover, the problems affecting the scientific systems and the new forms of knowledge production, and particularly Citizens Science, are introduced and why they are leading towards the construction of a democratic society of knowledge.
