Ruoli attanziali e valenze simboliche della Sfinge nella drammaturgia edipica, dall’epoca del Simbolismo ai giorni nostri

In Oedipus’ myth, the Sphinx is a characteristic and crucial motif, about whose origins and functions interpreters since the antiquity have been raising questions. Literarily present mainly in striking but fleeting evocations on the Attic stage and in mythographers’ writings, the Sphinx gains a leading role from the Romantic period on and mostly in Symbolist movement, becoming an emblem either of enigmaticity of being or of psycho-existential states. A history of this relevant motif in western dramatical production, which could take into account both their multi-faced roles and interconnections with other literary genres and visual arts in the broadest cultural context, has not yet been written; therefore, this paper offers a brief overview of the classical sources about the Sphinx, historical and typological remarks on nineteen modern versions of the myth (by H. Ibsen, A. Jarry, J. Péladan, M. de Unamuno, G. Prellwitz, H. von Hofmannsthal, O. Kokoschka, A. Gide, J. Cocteau, G. Enescu – E. Fleg, J. de Castro Osório, N. Correia, P. P. Pasolini, A. Moravia, M. Hubay, M. Valency, S. Berkoff, R. Rosso, S. Bartegazzi), and finally a minimal anthology. The bibliography here provided refers strictly to defined quotations.

Nel mito di Edipo la Sfinge costituisce un motivo caratteristico e cruciale, sulla genesi e le funzioni del quale gli interpreti sin dall'antichità non hanno cessato di interrogarsi. Letterariamente presente soprattutto in suggestive ma fugaci evocazioni della scena attica, la Sfinge assume, a cominciare dall'età romantica e massimamente nel movimento simbolista, una dimensione protagonistica in quanto emblema dell'enigmaticità dell'essere o di stati psico-esistenziali. Deve ancora essere scritta una storia di questo importante motivo nella produzione drammatica occidentale, che renda conto dei suoi molteplici ruoli e delle sue interconnessioni con gli altri generi letterari e con le arti visive nel più vasto contesto culturale; a tale scopo, questo articolo offre una breve ricognizione delle fonti classiche sulla Sfinge, considerazioni in prospettiva storica e tipologica su diciannove versioni moderne del mito (di H. Ibsen, A. Jarry, J. Péladan, M. de Unamuno, G. Prellwitz, H. von Hofmannsthal, O. Kokoschka, A. Gide, J. Cocteau, G. Enescu – E. Fleg, J. de Castro Osório, N. Correia, P. P. Pasolini, A. Moravia, M. Hubay, M. Valency, S. Berkoff, R. Rosso, S. Bartegazzi) e infine un’antologia minima. La bibliografia qui riportata è strettamente limitata a citazioni puntuali.
