Abstract

Is it true that Italian teenagers live with a law level of civicness and do not respect the law? How to measure their knowledge and practice of social norms? As many of them all around Europe, even Italian adolescents are significantly influenced by secolarization and "de-normativization" in society. They are also disoriented about the adult's inconsistency, and desire strongly both the autonomy and the risk in their life. In the light of a wide literature, both national and international, the book diescribes from a Socioloy of education perspective all the consequences of the "de-normativization" on the relationship between teenagers and the Law in family, school, formal and informal agencies of socialization. There are findings drawn from a social surevy carried out in five Italian cities (sample 3050 teenagers) between 2011 and 2013, that show: their often "slippery"perception of the boarder betwween legal and illegal; their exposition to illegality and risks according to their living and scholl environment, the different degrees of trangression, and the inner motivations they bring to justify illegal behaviour. One can design the "legal culture" Italian adolescents have, though they can't easily contextualize the honesty and hjustice principles. As normative sources they trust in: home and school's significant adults, who are considered fundamental in order to identify the right way to behave and to judge things both in private and public sphere. Their "competence in legality" looks definitively as high or almost-high, and is common to all social classes, though some marginalized profiles of adolescents are not to be neglected, as those of the "disengaged", "challenging" and "rebels" who push the adults to interrogate themselves. All this leeds to a hopeful conclusion: there are reasons to expect a newly ferment towards an active civility of youngsters, often cosidered (by error) by adults only "minor" in society.
