In Milan, the first solemn procession of Corpus Christi was held on June 15th 1335. The great organizer of this innovative ritual was the bishop of Novara Giovanni Visconti. It was celebrated in a crucial historical moment for the city, when the interdict on Milan had not been definitively removed and relations between the Visconti and the papacy were still troubled. In the procession devotional elements intertwined with civic and family factors. Thus it became a tool to stabilize a power and a dominion still unstable and in need of legitimacy.

Abstract
In Milan, the first solemn procession of Corpus Christi was held on June 15th 1335. The great organizer of this innovative ritual was the bishop of Novara Giovanni Visconti. It was celebrated in a crucial historical moment for the city, when the interdict on Milan had not been definitively removed and relations between the Visconti and the papacy were still troubled. In the procession devotional elements intertwined with civic and family factors. Thus it became a tool to stabilize a power and a dominion still unstable and in need of legitimacy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
